Real musicianship isn’t about talent or memorization; it’s about understanding how music works.
That’s what I call musical literacy, and it lies at the heart of everything I teach.
My Journey
When I first sat at a piano at age eleven I had a simple goal. Play Gospel piano in church. Sounds simple enough, right? I had only just started going to church and the music was awesome. The best musicians there were only slightly older than I was, so I figured I could probably learn to play as well as they did fairly quickly, but my learning journey was far from smooth.

I started taking lessons as soon as I could and like many students, I was taught the traditional way, to read notes, follow rules, and repeat. What I wasn’t taught was why music works. Harmony, rhythm and melody, the real building blocks of music, were a mystery.

For years, I struggled to understand what I was playing. My piano teacher was teaching me “proper” theory and technique, which I’m thankful for to this day. But I was teaching myself to play by ear, like the fantastic musicians I saw and heard, who were not reading sheet music. Through trial and error, I slowly discovered the patterns and principles that make music make sense.
My teaching method exists so my students can discover those truths without years of struggle.
My Promise to You
I know what it feels like to struggle with music; to love it yet feel locked out of its logic. I’ve been there. And that’s why I teach the way I do.
My mission is to simplify the learning process and empower you to develop real musical independence without years of frustration.
